What is a Cheap Mountain Bike?

A cheap mountain bike is a type of bike that is designed for off-road terrain and is priced affordably. While expensive mountain bikes offer high-end features and materials, a cheap mountain bike is often built with more basic components and materials to keep the cost down.

Here are some common features you might find on a cheap mountain bike:

  1. Rigid frame: Cheaper mountain bikes typically have a frame made of aluminum or steel rather than carbon fibre.
  2. Basic suspension: Some cheaper mountain bikes may come with a suspension fork, but it may not offer the same level of performance as higher-end models.
  3. Mechanical disc brakes: Cheaper mountain bikes often come with mechanical disc brakes, which are effective but may require more maintenance than hydraulic brakes.
  4. Entry-level drivetrain: Cheaper mountain bikes often have a lower-end drivetrain, such as Shimano Tourney or Altus.

While a cheap mountain bike may not have all the bells and whistles of a high-end model, it can still be a great choice for riders on a budget or beginners just getting started in the sport.

Whats the Difference Between a Cheap Mountain Bike and an Expensive MTB?

So you’ve done a bit of research into mountain bikes and have decided that it’s time to treat yourself to a new bike. You’ve seen all the latest mountain bikes and maybe even tried one, but can’t seem to figure out if you should get a cheap mountain bike or an expensive one.  Along with reading product reviews, you might also be trying to figure out how good or bad each bike is for certain features. For example, you want to know how an expensive mountain bike feels compared to a cheap one and what the differences are between each bike.

Frame Material:

The Difference Between a Cheap Mountain Bike and an Expensive Mountain Bike you may ask. Well the main one is the frame material. Cheaper mountain bikes frames tend to be steel or in some cases aluminium, the more expensive are aluminium or carbon fibre frames.

Cheap mountain bikes are aimed at the novice or entry level mountain biker. Typically these people do not know a lot about bicycles and are not very heavy, they also do not ride over really rough terrain. This bike is the perfect starter for them as they will probably destroy their bicycle within a few years anyway. If you have never had a mountain bike before and don’t know whether you’ll stick with it then this is the place to start. The more expensive ones, usually made from aluminium or carbon fibre, are for the slightly more advanced rider who rides a lot and also over different types of terrain.

Okay first things first, there’s a lot of rubbish being banded around about the frame material on mountain bikes. People saying things like: steel is heavy and weak, aluminium is heavy and slow but strong and carbon fibre is light and fast but expensive. All this is just rubbish. Bolting an aluminium frame to best quality alloy or carbon fibre components, you can create a very light bike that will take everything from cross country trail riding through to downhill racing.

Components:

Apart from the frame, which we have dealt with, is components. The cheaper the mountain bike the cheaper the components and the more expensive a mountain bike the more expensive the components, well this is the rule some people believe in. But there is a middle, the companies that spend les on marketing can spend more on components and still come out pretty cheap.

What is important though is that cheap mountain bikes come without such good components, something that can make your ride an exercise in agony with regards to performance. We look now at some of the differences between cheap and expensive mountain bikes so you know why we are talking more about a cheap mountain bike.  Now, here is the Right Advice when looking for a Cheap Mountain Bike.

In some cases they have the same components, in some cases they even use better components. By better I mean a company like Giant or Scott will use a lighter material on their frames and get similar performance to a more expensive frame but as I said before, this is the rule and it might not apply to all online bikes.

Wheels:

One of the other differences between cheap mountain bikes and expensive mountain bikes is the wheels and tires. As you can imagine, there are many different types of tire options to choose from. A good mountain bike will have a great pair of wheels and tires.

To sum it up, cheap mountain bikes wheels are made with a lesser quality of steel and the tires are not as durable as those on expensive mountain bikes. In particular, Cheap mountain bikes will more than likely have a brand name wheel that is manufactured in China or elsewhere, while more expensive mountain bikes are likely to have a brand name wheel made in Europe or in the USA where better material is used.

This difference is also usually the main difference between cheap mountain bikes and expensive mountain bikes. Cheap MTB’s tend to have more basic components and overall a lower quality build compared to their pricier counterparts. This means that you can have a better build on a cheap MTB but this will still not compare to an expensive mountain bike.

Mountain bikes are built to handle a variety of terrains. You’ll find mountain bikes that are designed for use on the road, with thin smooth tires and straight handlebars…these have limited off-road capabilities and you might find it hard to handle them on a challenging trail.  Other mountain bikes have fat wide tires and suspension…these are made for rough trails.

Limitations of Cheap Mountain Bikes

Limitations of Cheap Mountain Bikes, we have to be real and there are limitations for use of cheap mountain bikes. You need to limit the more extreme off road use, you may want to not do extreme down hill mountain biking.

You’d be hard pressed to find a more versatile vehicle for off-road use than a mountain bike. Or, if you’re just looking for a great way to get some exercise while enjoying nature, a mountain bike may be worthwhile investment. But not all mountain bikes are created equal. Before embarking on this type of adventure, there are certain limitations of cheap mountain bikes you should be aware of before purchasing. While it is true that taste and preference vary greatly from person to person, one thing remains constant – safety!

But with a good mountain bike you can go off-road. A basic mountain bike can also be used to ride around town like any other road bike, even though using it for everyday commuting is not recommended. … Here are some tips on how to choose the best inexpensive mountain bikes so that you enjoy the rides as much as possible.

Cheap mountain bikes are ideal for the entry level mountain bikers, these riders are new to riding and don’t want to spend a lot of money. I have done extensive research on this topic because I too sometimes use cheap mountain bikes. I even have in the past also gone cheap on them. I have three main points on things to watch for with cheap mountain bikes. First, the suspension systems can be rough at times, they don’t offer great performance and really any type of off road trail use or downhill extreme mountain biking you will find challenges.

There are certain limitations of cheap mountain bikes that need to be known, even when researching cheap mountain bikes. Some people may think that the cheaper you get the more limitations there are. There are limitations that come with all mountain bikes. We all need to have a good idea of what the limitations are for any bike, no matter how much money it costs, this will make us all better cyclists just by educating ourselves on biking itself instead of just riding our bikes and not knowing any better.

What it comes down to is you get what you paid for. You can not expect a £250 entry level mountain bike to be able to handle the same abuse as one of our £1200 professional grade mountain bike cruisers. And that is where the majority of customers who purchase bike for say a kid which will probably outgrow it within a year or two, or just getting into mountain biking themselves, and need a cheap way to see if riding a mountain bike is something they will enjoy, are usually fine with spending £250-£500 on a decent mountain bike. But I have to say this, even though the money spent might be less on these cheaper bikes, the limitations of cheap mountain bikes will make it more difficult for you and your kids to ride.
